To Ponder in Prayer . . .

“Behold your mother. Behold your son.” These words resonate within us, raising questions that we alone can answer. Do I in fact behold the other person with loving eyes? Do I honestly long for genuine connection? If not, why not? Am I willing to speak to Jesus about this, and to ask for his healing and probing word? If I feel Jesus nudging me to initiate, restore, or renew a particular relationship, what is the most authentic way to do so?

As you go through the day, bring to mind this word from the cross. Listen to these words as you interact with other people—as you wait in line, as you drive, as you pick up the phone, as you talk to a family member or friend. Listen to these words as you interact with the natural world—as you feel a breeze on your face, as you catch sight of a tree, as you sense the earth beneath your feet. What happens? How do you respond? What are the relationships that Jesus is inviting you to explore, reclaim, or redeem?

Go outside for a contemplative walk. Walk slowly and in silence, letting each step draw you into the present moment. Notice sounds, smells, and colors. If you feel drawn to do so, invite Christ to walk beside you.

Let some part of the natural world draw your attention. Pause to spend time with it. Use all your senses. Engage your body, if you can: touch the object, sit down on it if it is a rock, lean against it. Maybe you have seen it a thousand times before, but see it today as if for the first time. Notice every detail, pondering it quietly. Let what you are gazing at disclose itself to you. Let God be present in your gazing.

How is God addressing you through the natural world? What is God trying to show you? How do you respond?
